Blood banks
Blood bank transport
Scheduled restocking, urgent call-outs, cross-match deliveries and returns of near-expiry units, all inside the range blood has to stay in.
What goes wrong
01
Blood has a narrow storage range and a short life. Time out of range is not recoverable, and a unit that has been allowed to drift is not a delayed delivery. It is a discarded one.
02
Demand is not predictable. A scheduled restock covers the ordinary week. The call that matters is the one that comes without warning, and the arrangement has to work then rather than only on the timetable.
03
Near-expiry units returned in time can still be used somewhere. Units returned late are waste, and waste in a blood supply is not primarily a financial problem.

What we do about it
How the work is set up.
04 points
01
Scheduled restocking
Routine replenishment runs between the blood bank and the hospitals it supplies, on a timetable that both sides can plan around.
02
Urgent call-outs
Unscheduled runs where the requirement is immediate. Tell us the pattern you need covered and we will tell you honestly what we can commit to.
03
Cross-match deliveries
Samples out for cross-matching and units back, treated as one time-bound movement, not two unconnected jobs.
04
Collections from mobile drives
Units brought back from remote donation sessions to the main bank, packed for the journey they are actually making.
Questions
Asked by teams in this position.
Not covered here? Send us the detail and we will answer it directly.
Can you handle urgent unscheduled runs?
Tell us the pattern, meaning how often, what hours and which routes, and we will give you a straight answer about what we can commit to rather than agreeing to something we cannot consistently hold.
Can you collect from mobile blood drives?
Yes, bringing units back from remote donation sessions to the main bank. Give us the locations and the schedule and we will confirm what works.
How is temperature maintained in transit?
Packing is selected for the product and the length of the journey, agreed before collection, not decided at the door. For blood that decision is the job.
